History

The building that houses Stadsherberg de Mol was built in the Year of Our Lord 1563. The exterior walls are almost half a meter thick on the ground floor, narrowing as one ascends. The building’s “frame” consists of very thick wooden beams. The upper floors are also made of wood.

The building’s original function was as a City Foundling House. Apparently, there were quite a few foundlings at the time, because the building was originally twice as deep as it is now, extending all the way to the Burgwal. Over the centuries, the building has also been used for various other purposes. For example, if a plague epidemic raged in the city, infected residents were gathered in the City Foundling House. During the Beeldenstorm (Beeldenstorm), valuables from the Franciscan Monastery were stored there to prevent them from being vandalized.

Over time, the building has fortunately retained its medieval appearance. Although some modern amenities have been added, it still exudes the atmosphere of the era in which it was built.

Since 1979, the building has once again been given a medieval function as an inn: Stadsherberg de Mol. Since then, thousands of guests from both the Netherlands and abroad have enjoyed the building’s authentic atmosphere and the medieval theme nights we organize.

It’s no wonder we’ve been able to say for many years:

Stadsherberg de Mol brings the Middle Ages back to life for you!

Our rooms

Stadsherberg de Mol offers several rooms where private groups can host various medieval-themed evenings.

Depending on the group and the package you choose, it’s possible to combine multiple Saelen for a single group.

Taveerne

The Tavern is our restaurant, open Tuesday through Sunday. It seats approximately 80 guests. There is room for about 40 on the ground floor, where some old church pews are placed along the sides. An equal number of guests can be accommodated in the Gaanderij, a raised area accessible by stairs. A few chickens roam freely in the Tavern.

Great Hall

A spiral staircase leads to our Groote Sael (Great Hall) on the first floor of the Stadsherberg. It can accommodate up to 180 guests, but we can also make the Groote Sael smaller with some heavy fabric curtains, allowing even smaller groups to enjoy an atmospheric medieval evening. The Groote Sael features a characteristic open fireplace with a mantelpiece, which is still heated during larger gatherings.

Weesen Sael

If you continue up the spiral staircase, you’ll reach the Weesen Sael (Orphans Hall). You’ll find yourself at the very top of the building, and you can still see the entire beam structure. The Weesen Sael can accommodate up to 60 guests..

Klooster Sael / Broeder Lazarus

A little further back on the ground floor and with its own entrance from outside, you will find Broeder Lazarus, our medieval pub. This atmospheric space also has a Gallery and can seat 120 guests in total. Broeder Lazarus is a regular venue for (student) parties and drinks.
